Mini-School of Innovation

The Mini-School of Innovation is an initiative of the Casa de Mateus Foundation and the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro. Coordinated by Alfons Cornella, an expert in innovation and forward thinking, founder of the Institute of Next in Barcelona, it was first established in 2018.

As part of the ECO Mateus programme, it encourages a transdisciplinary approach in the reading and understanding of the plurality of opportunities and weaknesses faced by the Region, provides insights into value from its endogenous resources, familiarises Region’s agents with the concepts associated with innovation management, tools providing and training for the transition between research, product development and strategies for its business.

Date: July 12th to 14th, 2018

The 2018 edition of the Mini-School of Innovation, coordinated by Alfons Cornella, with the presence of Ragnar Siil, took the value pyramid model to take a look at innovation in the Douro Region and question the traditional perceptions that condition the standard narrative of the region.

Date: May 30 to June 1, 2019

In the 2019 edition, Alfons Cornella addressed the “New Tourism Trends”, “New Business Models in Agro-food” and “New Business Models for Vine and Wine”. It involved entrepreneurs from the region, teachers and students from the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro, as well as employees of the Casa de Mateus Foundation.

How to innovate in a rapidly changing world? What challenges has the new reality brought to the agricultural and food industries? What is the difference today, between what is normal and what is radical? In the 2020 edition, in a virtual environment, the Mini-School of Innovation looked for signs of the future in the face of the uncertainty of the pandemic.
