The Private Foundation of the Casa de Mateus was created to preserve the historical heritage of the house, to study the family archive and to promote cultural, scientific and educational activities, in accordance with its statutory aims.
The Casa de Mateus is one of the most emblematic images of the country and, without a doubt, one of its most beautiful Barroque-style buildings, classified as a national monument since 1911. In the light of a sunny day, we are struck by the familiarity of this property. We feel at home here. This feeling touches most visitors who arrive here and feel amazed by this estate. The Foundation continues the tradition of preserving the agricultural and wine-growing exploration linked, also, to wine tourism.
Follow us on a historical journey with a guided tour inside the House and its Chapel. You can also take a stroll through the beautiful French-style gardens and visit the wine cellars.
Since 1973, the Managing Director of the Casa de Mateus Foundation, Fernando de Sousa Botelho Albuquerque, son of D. Francisco, began on December 3, 1977 with the cycle "Culture in Dialogue", the activities of the Foundation.
